Base 5 have had a fantastic day out at Chirk Castle today and they were amazing!
We started the day exploring the grounds and we had a few things to find:Offa’s Dyke, the kitchen gardens, a toad, a hare, the ha-ha and they had to find out how the hedges had been shaped. The formal gardens were lovely and we could see spring starting to appear. There were daffodils everywhere! We did find everything we had been tasked with and we learnt that the hedges were shaped like the top of the castle walls and ladies hats.
We sat in the old hawk house for lunch and then made our way into the castle. We started in Adam’s Tower, where we found the dungeon – everyone was very eager to go down the narrow, winding staircase. It was dark and dingy and most definitely not a place any of us would have wanted to be trapped. We also had the opportunity to try on some chainmail with helmets and shields! After that, we made our way up the tower and discovered different rooms that all had curved walls.
Once we had explored the tower, we headed into the castle where we found the library with books over 500 years, the red bedroom where King Charles 2nd stayed, the saloon, the long gallery and the dining room. The children enjoyed reading the information about the furniture and artefacts in each room. We also went in the chapel and the servant’s hall which was very dark!
We finished our day sketching the castle and looking at the detail on the crest above the door, where we saw the family symbol – a hand!
It was a lovely day out with plenty of learning and exploring!
