'Reading is breathing in; writing is breathing out'

Mrs Charlesworth is our English Subject Lead.

Intent
At Wrenbury we believe that reading is the most powerful tool a child can have; "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." (Dr Seuss) We aim for all our children to be lovers of reading, with a knowledge that reading opens new worlds for them both when reading for pleasure and reading for knowledge. Where reading begins, writing follows. We aim for our children to be competent writers, using writing as a tool for expression and creativity. To complete our vision for our children, we place value in oracy. We want our children to know that they have a voice, that their voice matters, and can use it with confidence and clarity in a wide range of situations.

Implementation:
The National Curriculum Programme of Study (PoS) for reading and writing for each year group forms the basis of our teaching and learning. Our Early Years team use 'Little Wandle Letters and Sounds' to guide their phonic teaching.

At Wrenbury, we believe that 'reading is breathing in, writing is breathing out' and as such our learning is led though carefully selected, high quality texts which are woven into the termly themes; supporting our culture of reading for pleasure. Our teachers and our children utilise the Education Library service, ensuring that class libraries are current and include fiction, non-fiction and poetry. This not only reflects class learning but ensures the children are engaged, excited and inspired by the books in their classroom.

Writing flows from the quality reading texts that are used in lessons. This supports the children to write with purpose and understanding whist scaffolding their first steps. Teachers teach in an 'I do, we do, you do' style, ensuring that children are confident before working independently. During different points in a child's learning journey, they may require a longer stage of 'we do' and teachers support this. Underpinning this is a desire to foster within our children a curiosity to develop, understand and apply a rich vocabulary to their own writing as well as acquiring the skills to write accurately, applying their knowledge of English grammar and punctuation and the conventions of spelling.

Our learning environments are purposefully phonics, word and text rich linking to the range of subjects the children learn to deepen learning. Alongside reading and writing, our teachers support our children to speak confidently and effectively in pairs, groups, and larger audiences, guiding them to voice and support their own thoughts and opinions whist being respectful and considerate to the views of others. Children are guided in their learning though teacher modelling, sentence starters and targeted questioning and guidance as part of our quality first teaching.

Impact
Our children have a love of learning which is led by a love of reading. They are inspired by the texts they encounter on their learning journey and as a result achieve excellent writing of their own. They are confident when speaking in front of others and participate in group discussions with ease, knowing that everyone's voice matters and should be heard with respect.
