This week, our Year 4 scientists carried out an exciting investigation to explore friction and how it affects movement. Using a ramp and a small toy car, the children tested how different materials changed the way the car travelled down the slope.
The children placed a variety of materials on the ramp, including surfaces such as fabric, paper and bubblewrap, and observed what happened to the car as it moved. They noticed that some materials caused the car to slow down much more than others. This led to fantastic discussions about how rough surfaces create more friction, while smoother surfaces allow objects to move more easily.
