World War Two Day in Base 5

27th September 2024 – by Miss Phillips
Back home  /  WWII Day in Base 5

What a fantastic day we have had in Base 5! The children all looked fantastic as evacuees.

We started our day with our class assembly where we introduced who we are using our names from the 1940s. We unpacked a suitcases that an evacuee would have packed and shared a bit of information about World War Two. The children spoke clearly and confidently.

We then went on to make our gas mask boxes and identification cards for when we got evacuated. Whilst doing this, an air raid siren went off. We had to dash out of the classroom and into the hall but we did not have a shelter to protect us, so we built one. We then got inside to see what it what have been like in a dark, cramped space.

We wrote a postcard to send back home after we had been evacuated. An air raid siren went off not long after we arrived!

In the afternoon, we learnt about rationing and why there was a need for it during the war. We made rationing booklets and chose the shops that we would use to buy the different foods from. Using a 1940s cookery books, we planned out our meals for the week making sure we made the most of the food rations. We then got to use our ration books to buy an orange juice and a chocolate bar.

As homework, Alice made the whole class gingerbread men and rock cakes using recipes from the 1940s. They looked fabulous! Thank you Alice.

Base 5 have had a fantastic day!
