Welcome Back, Base 5!

A huge welcome back to all of our Base 5 children! It has been fantastic to welcome everyone into the classroom and begin our new year together. We have had a brilliant first day, getting used to our new routines, reconnecting with friends and beginning our learning for the year ahead.

Exploring the Geography of Cheshire

We got straight into our Geography learning today by beginning to explore the topography of Cheshire and considering the question: Where would you build a Roman settlement?

The children explored how the shape of the land, rivers and different elevations would have influenced where the Romans chose to settle. We considered important factors including water, defence, transport, trade and natural resources before using geographical evidence to decide on the best location for a Roman settlement.

We also began creating 3D topographical models of the local landscape, helping us to visualise how hills, valleys, rivers and flatter areas are represented on a map. This provided a fantastic introduction to our work on Cheshire and the Romans and will lead us into investigating why the Romans chose locations such as Chester for their settlements.
