We have had a wonderful STEM day today. This morning we learnt about what STEM meant and what jobs we might have as part of STEM. We then used a simulator to look at what energy sources we could purchase to help run a farm sustainably. The children had to consider cost, environmental impact and energy performance.
We then looked at the change in technology over time. The children were shocked that in the (not too distant) past schools had computer rooms with large desktop computers rather than the iPads that we use today!
This afternoon, we looked at STEM in action. We reflected on our history learning about Ancient Egyptian farming and how the Nile was key in the creation of the rich, fertile soil the farmers used. We recreated the Nile and farm land around, all the children agreed that channels or canals needed to be created to help the water get from the Nile to all the farmland. They were all thrilled when their canals worked and the water flowed from the Nile down the canals that they had made.
After this, they considered how the Ancient Egyptians engineered a shaduf to help them to collect and distribute the water even further. The children then designed and created their down prototype. The children were very quick to problem solve and worked well in their teams to create their prototype.
Well done Base 3 – a super afternoon was had by all.
