On Friday, Base 5 had a challenge to investigate. In the world, we have a problem with microplastics polluting the oceans. We wanted to investigate how we could remove microplastics from water. Because we didn’t want to pollute the water more, we used sand instead. We had a variety of materials to see which would be the best for separating the sand from the water. We used filter paper, paper, card, a sieve and fabric. The filter paper proved to be the best but once it had been wet for a while, holes started to appear and released the sand into the water.
Base 5 ask you to think carefully about products that you use on water and check that they do not contain microplastics.
