B4 S T E M Day

Back home  /  B4 S T E M Day

We have had an action packed day in Base 4 today discovering all things 'STEM'. The children have thoroughly enjoyed discovering many jobs that people do that involve Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and how important is it for our world to develop and for us to learn. We were shocked to learn that these jobs are not only for men to fulfil, but actually there are some very important women from the past who played key roles in technology and engineering fields, such as Hedy Lamarr, who devised a method of encrypting signals to prevent enemy spies to listen to sensitive pieces of information. Without her, there would be no wireless communication in our modern world!

As well as this, we have been virtually creating our own 'Energy Island', deciding which energy resources we need for the community, practising our budgeting skills to keep costs down, yet still trying to achieve maximum power output for the needs of the island.

A big thank you to Rachel Harrison, who came into class and spoke to us about how the national rail use STEM to fulfil their jobs. We looked at different materials and learned lots about conductors and insulators, which has got our Science brains fizzing.

Lastly, we all thought about the term 'Bioengineering' and how engineering meets medicine. This led us to look at examples of bioengineering we know today, such as the COVID vaccines, medicated creams and even how we can grow a burger in a laboratory! We then decided on something we would like to invent if we were all bioengineers and created posters to show our ideas. What a busy day!
