Year 6 ... amazing!
: September 2022
On Wednesday, the children explored the poem; 'Break, Break, Break' by Alfred Lord Tennyson. This poem was written after the loss of one of Tennyson's closest friends. After analysing it, we used it as a scaffold for our own poetry, turning it into a poem to describe the despair of a main character who had to leave his home due to raiders invading from Europe over 1000 years ago.
This incredible poem, alongside many others, was written by one of our Year 6 pupils ...
Break, break, break,
On thy cold, ashen rocks, O sea!
Oh, that my voice could scream,
the despair concealed within me.
Oh well for the raging waves,
that roll on the ocean all day.
Oh well for the gleeful gulls,
that fly endlessly away.
And the raiders ships continue forth,
invading the battlefield on the hill
But O for the shout of a warning call,
and the power to fight our will.
Break, break, break,
at the foot of thy burnt homes O sea.
But the tender grace of my haven that is gone,
will never come back to me.

The water we were drinking may have been sucked up by the trunk of a woolly mammoth or even supped Tutankhamun! The children loved the thought of this and we then learnt about the water cycle — the best recycling system! This...
