Welcome back Base 3
Miss Phillips: April 2017
In Base 3, we have had a great first 2 weeks back in the summer term. Everyone has come back well rested and ready to learn (including the teachers)!
In Literacy this week, we wrote a character description of the Native American Character from The Indian in the Cupboard. We started by describing the Native Americans, which we then improved by learning some of the technical vocabulary about their clothes. Following this we were able to write a description of the Native American ensuring we used plenty of detail, description, prepositions and some adverbs. Next week, we will be practising writing direct speech with the correct punctuation which will then be used within a story.
In Maths, we have been working on number and place value. We have been ensuring we know what the value of each digit within a number is, ordering and comparing numbers, adding and subtracting 10 or 100 and solving a range of different problems. Year 4 also looked at Roman numerals. Next week, we will be working on number lines and working out values in between the number lines and putting this into practise in more problems. Year 4 will also work with negative numbers.
On Tuesday, we ventured outside in search for different rocks/stones that we could find around the school grounds. We found plenty of different ones. We then grouped these rocks based on different characteristics, for example colour, shape, surface. We then looked at some different kinds of rocks including basalt and limestone, focusing on what they look and feel like. Next week, we will continue to work with rocks and will be focusing on whether a rock is hard or soft and permeable or impermeable.
We started our DT project this week, we are making a tepee!! We began by researching tepees and using the research to create our own design. We then were able to make the octagonal base out of cardboard, making sure we measured accurately. Following this, we drew out the shape of the skin/cover using fabric. Next week we will be putting designs onto the skin/cover and making it into a tepee!
Please remember to keep learning your spellings and times tables as much as possible, they are very important. Please also keep reading daily and remember your PE kits each week!

What a super return to school we have had! This week we enjoyed our first brass lesson and were great! The children were so enthusiastic and enjoyed listening to the music our teacher played. I think the children were fantastic at playing their own instruments with everyone being able to play and be part of a group piece by the end of the lesson. Well done everyone.
