A warm welcome back to everyone after the half term holidays.

This week in Base 5 we have been looking at angles in maths. Firstly we brushed up on our measuring and drawing skills and then moved on to drawing 2d shapes using a ruler and protractor. It was a bit tricky measuring those very precise angles, but we got better the more we practised. Some children met the challenge of accurately drawing polygons with many sides where they had to work out the interior angles first of all. Well done! We also continued with developing our problem solving skills. Some were very tricky and we worked on how we can explain how we worked things out. Keep practising this skill year 6.

In Literacy we worked on the poem 'The Listeners' by Walter de la Mere. We looked at the unfamiliar vocabulary in the poem and found out what those words meant. This helped us with our understanding of the poem as we read. We then worked on finding evidence within the poem to sort out true or false statements. We continued with the skill of finding evidence in the text and inferring meaning by looking at a past SATS paper all about Wolves, which linked nicely with out novel Wolf Brother. This work will be linked to our work next week when we will be writing persuasive pieces.

In History the children had fun looking at stone age weapons and tools. I challenged the children to write and perform a television advert advertising a stone age bow and arrow. They had to convince me why their bow and arrow was the best and why I should buy it. The language they chose was very important. We then went outside into the trees to film the adverts. We have some great actors and actresses in Base 5!

In Geography we looked at all the different features of mountains and learnt that not all mountains look the same. Next week we will be looking at how they are formed.

The children enjoyed an extra PE lesson on Friday where we started to learn the skills of Netball. As long as there is no rain we will continue this every Friday afternoon, so please ensure PE kits are in school.

On Tuesday we had a visit from the Fire Service about road safety. The children enjoyed a very interactive presentation and got to ask lots of questions. Thank you to Fire Fighter Sean for coming in to school to do this.

Homework this week is the next reading comprehension in your books and the work on angles to consolidate this weeks maths work.

See you all on Monday!
