Base 5 had a fantastic day at the Cheshire Military Museum on Monday. I was blown away with how well the children conducted themselves, the knowledge they had to share and the questions that they asked.

We spent the day learning about Cheshire during the war. We started the day learning about four people from Cheshire who served in WWII. We explored a range of documents about each person and had a range of questions to answer. We had to be historic detectives.

We then went on to learn about how we would stay safe during the war and got to look at some real gas masks. There were even gas masks for young children and for babies! We also looked at the different types of shelters that would have been used during an air raid. We had already learnt about Anderson Shelters but we found out a bout a new shelter, the Morrison Shelter, which would have been placed inside the houses. We had the chance to to inside one but it was very cramped and a but uncomfortable.

On the afternoon, we extended our learning about evacuees. We looked through the contents of an evacuees suitcase, made an identity label and then got to create a toy to take with us when we are evacuated. After that, we had time to explore the museum and try on some WWII clothes that the soldiers would have worn; they were not very comfortable. Finally, we because bomb disposal soldiers and had the learn how to put out an incendiary bomb. Thankfully, it wasn't a real bomb, just a potato. We put out the fire first using a water pump and hose. Then, using a shovel, we covered it with sand to cool it down before moving it carefully to a metal sand box.

It was a fantastic day with plenty of learn8ng opportunities and new memories.
