Well done Base 1! It has been a long half term for our reception children but they have all done a great job and have earned a good rest this week.

During our Math's lessons we have been on a number hunt, finding numbers in our environment and recognising them. We were surprised just how many numbers we spotted outside! The year 1's have been developing their understanding of place value, tens and ones, and what these actually mean. We have also been practising ordering numbers and recognising numbers that are important to us, eg our house number, ages.

During Literacy we have been developing our understanding of rhyming words. Our class book, The Gruffalo's Child showed us lots of good rhymes. Please practise this skill with your children. After half term we will be having a 'rhyme of the day' to help the children get better at this. The year 1's worked on writing sentences using full stops and capital letters.

I was really pleased when working 1:1 with the children on their phonics this week. They have learnt so much and the reception children are recognising letter sounds and beginning to blend words to read and spell! Well done! I am really proud of you all! Keep practising your letters and sounds over the holidays.

In Learning journey activities, Miss Willis carved out our small and large pumpkins with the help of the children and Mrs Mansfield kindly made pumpkin soup from what was scooped out. It was delicious, with many coming back for seconds! Thank you Mrs Mansfield.

We also learnt all about Bonfire night, learning about Guy Fawkes. Miss Pitchford followed this up with an assembly all about keeping safe during the bonfire season.

We were also very lucky to have our first mystery reader this week. The children enjoyed a story read by Mrs Caunce, which was a lovely end to the day. Please do sign up to take part in 'Mystery Reader', the children really enjoy having different people read to them.

Over the holiday I have sent home spellings and maths homework for the Year 1's and the phase 2 sound worksheets for the reception children. Please do what you can, but above all have a good rest and enjoy family time. We have a VERY busy half term coming up with a very special performance to get ready for!

Have a wonderful break.
Mrs McGhie
