Mathematics
At Wrenbury, we follow the new 'National Curriculum' for mathematics. Numeracy lessons incorporate a mixture of practical experiences, problem solving and formal written work. Strategies for mental calculation are at the heart of our children's mathematical development and are the foundation for securing mathematical knowledge. By linking our mathematical studies to everyday situations, wherever possible, the children increase their understanding of the subject, skills to solve problems and knowledge in all areas of mathematics.

Our aims include:

  • Developing mathematical fluency, understanding and the ability to apply mathematics to real life problems.
  • To reason and follow a line of enquiry.
  • Developing the language of mathematics.
  • To solve substantial problems
  • To use mathematics across the curriculum including in science, technology, computing, art.

KS1

In KS1 children will build on their learning from the Early Years Foundation Stage:

  • Number, place value and calculations — addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, money.
  • Measurement including work on weight, length, capacity, volume and time.
  • Geometry involving work on 2-D shapes, 3-D shapes, position and direction.
  • Statistics including pictograms, sorting, totalling and comparing.

KS2

In KS2 children will build upon and extend their understanding from KS1:

  • Number and place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals and money
  • Measurement — length, weight, volume and capacity, time (including digital and 24 hr)
  • Geometry — 2-D, 3-D shapes, angles, symmetry, co-ordinates, direction and position.
  • Statistics — interpreting and presenting data.
  • Algebra
  • Ratio and proportion.

The school's maths is taught through the White Rose Hub maths scheme supplemented with NCETM materials and other resources including 'Maths of the Day' activities.
We use MyMaths online homework alongside other maths homework and children are set a weekly maths task linked to their learning in class. You will need a log in from your class teacher to access the site.
